From Global to Local

From Global to Local

During Thursday’s salon you took “local” issues that pertain to your books and connected them to “global” issues is the world at large. Today you will first identify a global issue and show how it connects to a local issue.

Go to the BBC website http://www.bbc.co.uk/ and find an article that covers something that is happening in an ANOTHER COUNTRY. Then answer the following questions:

1. Give the name of the article that you chose along with a brief description of it
2. What sorts of global issues does the article deal with? For example: poverty, war, fair trade, natural disaster relief, health care, racial profiling, adoption etc.
3. Where do you see this larger global issue affect smaller local areas? For example: your high school, your family, a best friend, the local super market, Chicago Public Schools, this class, the way your cousin wears his hair etc.
4. How do you think the same global issue can affect many different people? What is it about these issues that make them so widespread? Do people who experience the same issue have a connection to one another, even if they’ve never met?

North France tornado kills three

This article covers a natural disaster that took place in France. This article could affect other people that like to help the world when they are in need for recovery of a natural disaster. People like the Red Cross. People whom lost loved ones because of a natural disaster can feel connected to one another. It’s almost in a sense they have nobody to blame for their loved one not being here. These people may be able to relate to the people of the Katrina Epidemic

"Chinese border assault kills 16"
1. More than a dozen chinese policeman were killed in the western region.
2. In Xinjiang, a war broke out between citizens protesting the Olympic games.
3. There have been outbreaks with the law like this in my nieghborhood.
4. The reason the citizens in China attacked the police officers was because they were standing up for their rights, in the olympic games. And any time there is a protest going on in the olympics, it usually leads to violence and some times even death. And because its the olympics and everyone particapates in this event, it affects everyone globally wether they agree with the way the protestors went about getting their point across.

I chose the article about Croatia. It's talking about a general wanted for war crimes and their president's death which greatly affected their economy. The article deals with civil and political rights as well as unemployment. This relates with local issues because we are in a recession right now and it is hard to obtain and maintain jobs. This issue can definitly affect other people. This issue is widespread because recession and unemployment seems to be happening everywhere. With recession many people lose their jobs or unable to obtain a job, causing prices to go up and more and more people to have to become financially aware. Everyone who is in a recession has a connection with other's in the same predicament even if they have never met. Someone people who i know that are having difficulties with the recession are my family in my villa. The price of living and euro are much higher in Croatia than it is in America, so they have to cut back on some of their spending and make wise decisions.

The title of my article is called “Beijing pollution: Facts and figures” which is about how the air pollution in Beijing. The air pollution is proving a problem for the Chinese over how to reduce for the Olympics when started they are there this later this week. I’ve seen this issue in my home state where they are trying to become more environmentally minded and reduce the pollution in the air and lake. This issue can affect many people because if people are living in polluted areas, they could develop illnesses like asthma or bronchitis. I know someone who has asthma and they have to use their inhaler after every time they run, otherwise something could happen.

Chinese border assault kills 16.
16 policeman were killed in an assault on a border post.
2.This issue is has to deal with violence and terrorism.
3.When things like terrorism and violence happen it makes countries become more secure. It makes everyone stop what they're doing sometime(9/11)
4.Global issues like violence usually have no effect on people globally, because it depends location, it sometimes has and effect on people depending on what type of person you are and what specifically happend.Issues dealing with violence and terrorism just makes me think like what if that happend down the street from me? It makes you very grateful.

"Chinese border assault kills 16" discusses how two men killed 14 jogging policeman in on a border post near Kashgar city in the western region of Xinjiang. This has alot to do with war because the chinese were warned that their might be targets aimed at the Beijing Olympic Games. This effects my community because if they take drastic measures than the united states will make sure that it dosen't happen to them and then they will have to make the same changes. The people that are effectd the most would be the middle eastern. They have bombings and war everyday unlike the united states where it's not civil, but it's not war.I think the people in the middle east can relate to a person dodging bullets in america. It is not the same but can be related with stories and experiences that they both have been thru. Thats one thing i can say about judging. You never know what someone has been thru.

"Thailand bans Grand Theft Auto IV"

The name says it all. This article deals with censorship and violence. It's kind of funny how people in a smaller country could be worried about the same issues people are worried about here. It was banned because an 18 year old killed a cab driver to see if it was the same as in the game.

An issue like this affects many people. Parents in Thailand are going to probably support this ban. Kids are probably still going to find a way to play the game. I think that it is harder for people to censor media here in the U.s. than it is in some other country. People here are exposed to many things and we watch violence on tv.

Kids affected by this issue in Thailand can relate to kids in the U.S because we always go through people trying to ban our media. Whether it is mothers or priests there are always people blaming games and music for society's problems. I think Thailand should think of other ways to stop criminals other than to ban a video game which will be replaced with another one.

West Bank teen dies from wounds. this article explains how Youseef Amira (A West Bank teenager) was shot in the back of the head by Israeli troops. This issue deals with war. I see this issue affecting my country more so my school and home. I say that because more violent gun shootings take place in war than my anywhere else.i can have an affect on many different people because someone's love one could be the one getting shot down or doing the shooting. what makes them widespread is the fact of innocent people being killed or war something they have no control over. People with the same issues have a conection to one another beecause they have experienced the same things.

The name of my article was titled Indian court in key abortion order. This article was about an Indian family who had their plea for abortion rejected because the mother was over 20 weeks pregnant. They wanted to abort the baby because of the didn’t think they would have a handicap and they didn’t think they would be financially stable. This article deals with the issue of abortion. This affects people everywhere especially teenagers because the abortion rate is higher every year. More and more people are having abortions because they're too young to have babies or they made a mistake and they don’t want their parents to find out so they feel that abortion is the only way to save their self. Abortion can affect anybody. I feel that people who experience the same thing do have a connection. The fact that everybody who’s been through it can relate to it and form a bond with somebody that they never even met.

The name of the article is, Chinese border assault kills 16. Yesterday, Sixteen Chinese policemen were killed in an attack on a border near Kashgar City, in the western region of Xinjiang. The two men, who attacked the officers, were both Uighur Muslims and have been arrested. China has warned that militant Uighur separists may target the Olympic Games.
The article deals with a terrorist threat from Xinjiang. They have been waging small fights with China for decades. But it has provided little evidence to back up its claims. This does effect the Olympics and us, because lots of people watch these games and if it is not going to be safe, not many people are going to watch. It also deals with how a big country, dictates what a smaller country has to do. This relates to anyone who has a job, because if your boss keeps taking things away from the workers, they will eventually not take it anymore. This is Xinjiang's way of not taking any more from China, and they will not stand for it any longer.
This issue will affect different people because a lot of them watch the Olympics. China knew that Xinjiang terrorists would be targeting the Olympics. They also said that this is just one of the many small things they have done, and they are planning something much bigger. The fact that all of these attacks have happened before the Olympic Games begin, is a huge deal for China and the rest of the world. This then causes other countries to have concern about if they should send their athletes or not. Other countries who have experienced some terrorist attack can relate by feeling helpless. Also they each have enhanced their security to make sure this sort of thing does not happen again.

"Chinese border assualt kills 16"
In this article two muslim attacked a troop of police by first driving into them and then attacking tem with explosives and knives. Thia attack was located about 2,000 miles away from Beijing, where the olympic games will be held. This is considered a treat to china from another race. Conflicts like this leads to things such as war. It affects people all over the world becuase there is never just two sides to an war people use there recoures and it just turns into a huge conflict. this issue is so widespread because there is war going on almost every where in the world.

The article I've chosen was "Helicopters continue to rescue on K2".
There was a massive avalanche on K2 leaving several people missing. K2 is one of the most dangerous mountains in the world to climb. It has a 27% higher fatality rate than Everest.
I think situations like natural disasters makes people all over the world a little more aware of there surroundings. Maybe not so much in a major city. It should however, make people stand back and look at what there about to do. Being fully prepared with what they are about to take on.
I think situations like natural disasters or disasters in general bring people together to help one another. Down in Quincy this past summer we had our first major flood since 93'. Everyone helped sandbagging, most not even for our community but surrounding communities and places that had been hit harder by the flood. Most of the surrounding small towns were places people in my town had never even been.
There is meaning in tragedy.
