Spirituality/Religion

Spirituality/Religion

1. What religions are focused on in your books?
2. Does your own religion relate to your book?
3. Compare/contrast your “religious life” to those of the characters. (compare: the habits that you have, whether or not your truly live by the religion)
a. Do you follow your religion or just claim it/use it as part of your image?
4. Is religion important to you, why or why not?
5. What questions do you have about religion/spirituality?
6. Do you believe in Karma or something similar?
7. Has your faith ever been tested, threatened or questioned by another person?
a. Have you ever gotten into an argument while standing up for your beliefs or putting down someone else’s?

Religion isn't really mentioned much in the book but I assume that they are christian just like me. I am a spiritual person that sometimes goes to church. I say sometimes cause I'm always working on sundays.

I have many habits which would be considered sins which is why I pray every night. Usually the prayer is for my family, then it is for people around me, then I pray for people that have told me they pray for me everyday, and then I pray for myself.

I believe in karma. I think it's just the way the world works.

I have seen other people challenging gods word and I really don't know how to respond because I don't know any of the verses or important facts. I guess for people like me faith leads the way.

This quote from the author in my book, Stranger than Fiction, shows his spiritually.
“Really, the spirit world is like pedophilia or necrophilia. I have no experience with it, so I am completely unable to take it seriously. It will always seem like a joke. There are no ghosts”
1. He has no experience with ghosts and he thinks they are just a joke
2. What I believe is complicated and I would rather not say.
3. A - I do what is right
4. Religion has its moments
5. I do my own research if I want to know something
6. I believe you life is already planned
7. I was forced to believe in religion. That explains why I am the way I am now
A - I ARGUE WITH IT EVERYDAY

In my novel it doesnt really specify a religion, but eustace would get up and pray with his pipe on turtle island. As far as my religion, i dont believe its exactly relevant to the book, but how ever i do believe in praying and prayer. i am a follower of my religion. religion is very important to me because it gives u some kind of piece of mind, and spiritual support. The questions i have about religion/spirituality is why arent everyone proud participants of both? I do believe in karma. My faith is always questioned through my aunt whom is an minister. I cant say i have gotten into an argument in regards to someone elses beliefs.

In the book Our America, there is no exact religion followed. They did mention God a few times but they never went any deeper. One example is when Lloyd said that because his mother died and he could not do anything about it that he blamed God and stopped praying and everything. He did take it back. My religion is similar to theirs. I’m a Christian and I go to church. I do follow my religion. I used to just claim it because my family just went along with it but it seems that I was not getting anything out of it. I finally decided to see what it was all about and it is where my heart is now. Religion itself is not important because we have to be the best people that we can to get into the kingdom and accept Jesus as your Lord and personal savior. Religion is too complicated. There are too many manmade religions out there for me to believe in religion. There are a million questions that I have to ask about religion. I will give you a few: What is the point of God creating humans? Are we alone in this universe and if not why can’t we see the life? And why did God allow Scientists to call a planet Uranus? These are just questions that randomly popped up in my mind but serious questions I will ask God when I get to heaven. I do believe in karma. I believe it is Gods way of punishing people. My faith has been tested on many levels where I felt as though I was going to give up on God and church and just “do me” but then if had a reality check that got me back in line. Religion in general is what people use to get themselves and their lives in order. The best advice is to believe what is in your heart. Don’t follow nobody’s religion. Do what you have to do to make it to heaven.

There is a mention of religion in the passage The Lady. “Oh, I’d love to believe in an invisible world. It would undermine all the suffering and pressure of the physical world. All our problems and all our blessings could be readily dismissed because they’d be no more real than plot events in a book or movie. An invisible, eternal world would render this world and illusion. “ (pg. 115) My religion does not fully relate to the religion in the book. I do also believe in ghosts. I am semi-religious. I do go to church and I do believe in God, but I don’t go to church every Sunday. I go to church on the significant days like Christmas, Easter, Palm Sunday and I use to go when they had mass during school. I don’t think you have to go to church every Sunday to be a good Catholic and that if you believe in God, you’ll go every Sunday. That’s stupid. I don’t just claim my image of being a Catholic. I follow Catholic teachings, not as often as I should probably, but I do. I don’t just go to church to say that I go to call myself a good Catholic, and then leave the parking lot cussing everybody out.
Religion is important to me. I think that it’s something to believe in and give you hope. Of course I have a lot of questions about my religion. Why did Jesus come when he did? Did he actually come? Is everything the same in the Bible, as it actually was for real? And if there was nothing, how was there God? But that doesn’t mean I don’t believe in God just because I question some things. I’m a strong believe in Karma. What goes around comes around.
One time an almost priest told me that I wasn’t Catholic because I believed in Karma. He said that Karma is the complete opposite of what a Catholic should believe in and it’s Satanic. And that made me mad so I argued with him and told him that I am a Catholic and that he has no right to tell me that I’m not.

In my book religion is not brought up much more of srituality. in the chapter "The Lady" characteres patrick and brenda both had ghost in their homes. My religion does not relate to this book, but in way it is sort of relate to my spirituality. I don't say that i do fully believe in ghost, i look at it more as a spirit of the mind. I follow my religion as best as I can less than i should be. If you don't worship some sort of god do you have an religion? i feel like the way you treat others some where along the line you will recive the same respect back. You are being tested at almost every moment of life, like the choices you make, which way to turn, and even what type of food you eat.

Most of the religion that was focused on in my book was Christianity (I believe). It wasn’t a lot of religion in the book, but in some parts they were talking about God. “ I know all white people can’t be bad, because God made us equal”. It’s not really telling us what they believe in but what we do know is that they believe in God and a higher power. Yes, my religion can relate to this book because we both believe in god and a higher power. I am a Christian and I would not be surprised if they were. I’m young so I still make mistakes in life, but by that I do try to follow my religion. I don’t read the bible as I should, but I do know what I should be doing in my everyday life. Yes, religious Is very important to me because it allowed me to get to know who created me and why. I also believe in faith and I know that the things that happen in my life are not planned by man. I actually have a lot of questions to ask about religion, but I am only going to ask a couple. How do I know if the religion I believe in is the right religion? What will happen to the humans or the world after it is over? And is it wrong to explore the different religions that are out in the world? I do believe in Karma because it has happened to me before. If you do something wrong a person or something then it is bound to come back to you, maybe not right then but later. I have tested my faith a little bit because I got tired of asking questions I couldn’t get answered. I started to try to learn the Muslims traditions, but I found out that some questions can’t be answered you have to find them out within yourself. I have gotten into an argument with someone about our religions. It was with a Muslim. We were arguing about the different beliefs and how we were created. I did stand up for my beliefs but at the same time they were making a point about some things. At the end of the day I know what I believe in and I’m going to continue to follow my beliefs

In the book there is an only stated religion in the book. In the chapter “The Lady” it talks about witchcraft and in the chapter “Why Isn’t He Budging?” he says he is an English Catholic. My religion relates some to this book because I am a Christian and I believe in God and Catholics believe in God also. We just go a different way about teaching and worshiping God. The characters in Stranger than Fiction are different from my religion. Since he is a catholic I don’t think that he listens to gospel like I do and I know that the choirs don’t sing gospel in church. I follow my religion to the fullest. I don’t think that it’s a necessity to be all boastful like some of the others do but I pray by myself and try to stay close to Jesus. Religion is important to be because I wouldn’t be anywhere if I didn’t have faith in God. He helped me so many times throughout the years that I owe him some praise. I have many questions about not really religion but why do certain things happen I the world. I do believe in karma because you are supposed to do onto others as you would want to be done upon you. Faith is always being tested but only to make you stronger. I got into an argument with an atheist a few years back because I didn’t see how he could say that he believed in God but he didn’t believe that he was floating around in the sky. I thought and still do think that he is crazy. I tried to tell him that he was blessed just to be where he was and he said it wasn’t because of God it was just meant to be.

There aren't any religious references in STF but the author does talk about spirits, and how he feels that there is no such thing as ghosts but sprits exist. Because if they did exist life as we know it, would be totally different. On page 115 he believes that "all our problems and all our blessings could be readily dismissed." I don't really agree with his whole though process, because I believe spirits are among us, and they are to protect or watch over us, like a guardian angel. When I was younger I went to church a lot because I went to a private school, and when I moved and went to a different school I stopped going to church. Unless my uncle, who’s a pastor, was doing something special for the holidays at his church I usually won’t go to church anymore. Although I still read the bible from time to time and try to follow in the footsteps in Jesus. I’m not religious at all. I Forgot all the prayers, and the stories from the bible, so I can’t say I’m religious when I’m not, but I do say I’m catholic when people ask what I am. I believe in karma and what you do, will come back to you. That’s why I try not saying or even think anything bad about anyone because every time I do, something happens to me. But that’s not just the only reason why I don’t think bad things about people; I do it because I think it’s wrong. Like Jesus said, treat others how you want to be treated. That’s why when you don’t obey that rule; something comes back at you at some point in your life. I don’t ever put down any beliefs that aren’t mine; although I can’t say the same for the peers around me. Everyday Jewish people are put, because they aren’t what the other person believes in.

Religion or a spiritual belief does show itself throughout my book. The author is a spiritual person and shares that connection with Eustace.
I would suspect that Eustace and myself relate in the spiritual department but its hard to tell, not much is mentioned. He is obviously a minimalist and doesn’t need much to be satisfied; I think we have that in common.
I think so many people don’t live out there faith. We’ve forgotten what it means to be called Christians. Going to church every Sunday for an hour and than screaming at people in the parking lot outside when it’s over because they can’t get out quick enough isn’t what Jesus ever told us to do. Church is a great way to get connected those who share your belief system, get connected in the community and better yourself as a person, but it doesn’t just stop there. It’s all about what we do outside the doors that really has an impact on people. I love the quote “Preach the gospel and when necessary use words”. I try and do that each day. Just treating everyone with respect and love. We need a lot more of that in this world.
My spirituality is so important to me. It’s gotten me through some hard times. Giving me something to turn to not just in a tough situation but just in daily activities.
There are so many questions I have.
I do believe that what you do has an effect on someone else and that that act of kindness works its way back to you. Lets try it!
I am tested everyday, it is questioned everyday. I am reminded though that to walk into faith we often times walk through a lot of doubt. There is a lyric by one of my favorite artists Dustin Kensrue that remind me to just relax and put thing in Gods hands…

“And its safe to say we’ll never know everything, still the blessings we receive, and its safe to say I’ll never know anything, still I choose to believe”

I don’t believe I have ever gotten into a strong argument over someone else’s views; I try not to be apart of conflict. I have been put down for what I believe before, and to that upsets me. A non believer putting down my beliefs is like me walking up to them on the street and hitting them in the face with the Bible and telling them what to believe…I would never put down someone else’s beliefs. I personally believe God has his hand in all that is good. When non believers put down the ideas of spiritual people by calling them ignorant I think that makes me the most upset. Faith has nothing to do with ones intelligence it is simply that, faith. Faith and belief in something bigger than ourselves and a greater meaning behind everything we do. If you don’t believe that’s fine I respect that in you but this is what works for me and I’m okay with that.
